Work Force
Umbhaba Estates is a family owned Agribusiness company which operates on a completely non-racial, equal-opportunities basis.
The retail outlets require undivided attention to their product needs throughout the year (inclusive of festive seasons and all public holidays). Bananas are pre-packed and labeled according to the various quality and packaging specifications of our customers. The operational management functions within an environment that can be described as having zero tolerance for mistakes, which stretches management and workers to perform at their peak on an ongoing basis.
In order to ensure safe passage of staff who travel in from neighboring areas and due to a lack of formal transport Umbhaba acquired six 70-seater busses to assist workers with their transport requirements.
Various initiatives are introduced to ensure the advancement of Black Management. To mention but a few:
1. In-house training programs
2. Learnerships for young agricultural college graduates
3. Support is provided to the local school
Umbhaba has developed in-house training modules to ensure that the Best Practices developed throughout the years are complied with to ensure not only efficient production but also a top quality product for the end user.
A most remarkable fact is that, during the past 16 or so years, Umbhaba created around 2,000 new full time jobs in Agriculture. This is against the background of a declining trend in the number of agricultural employees on a national basis for the period in question.
